“Road to Harvard” – Essay competition 2019 - Deadline extended to June 2, 2019

Win an educational trip to Harvard University!

The Harvard Scholarship Foundation Germany e.V. - the scholarship initiative of the five German Harvard Clubs - is organising for the second time the essay competition "Road to Harvard" after its great success in 2017.

For many, elite universities, such as Harvard, or even university education itself seem unattainable or unfeasible. But we want to give students the chance to overcome these apparent hurdles by helping them to become aware of their strengths. On the one hand we want to inspire young, talented people so that they use the last years of school even more motivated. On the other hand, we want to raise the students' awareness of the requirements, selection criteria and the financial support possibilities of such universities. Harvard is only accessible to a few - but financially affordable for many.

Above all, we would like to encourage students who have little to no contact in the academic field or abroad and who have not yet considered higher education. Especially young people from less privileged and non-academic households should be motivated and encouraged. All young people between the ages of 16 and 19 are invited to participate in the competition. In the first year of the competition, we contacted more than 400 schools across Germany, of which eight schools participated in the competition. Almost 80 students from all over Germany applied. Out of 25 finalists, six winners were chosen to travel to Cambridge in October 2017 to immerse themselves in the world of Harvard University.

Participation is possible until June 2, 2019. You must be between 16 and 19 years old, high school student and living in Germany.

All that needs to be done is to submit an essay on the topic "How do recent political developments affect German-American relationships respectively the relationship between the two countries?" And a letter of motivation in English. There are no costs for the students, participation and travel to Harvard are completely financed by our association. From the submitted entries, 20 finalists will be selected who will be awarded the title "German Laureate Road to Harvard" at the Harvard Club Dusseldorf Summer Festival, which will take place on July 20, 2019. In interviews on the same day, four winners will be selected, who can begin the one-week educational journey to Harvard University at the end of October.
